The Take the Next Step Project aims to empower diverse young women living in Merri-bek to make informed choices regarding their economic security, bodies, and relationships. The project builds upon the success of NCLC’s Take the First Step Project, where we worked with women from diverse cultural backgrounds to become family violence Peer Educators. This extension project will work with 12 young and diverse women so that they can in turn support, empower, educate and mentor other young women as they transition into adult relationships.

The project will address key risk factors and drivers of family violence and homelessness. Working across schools, youth programs, and other appropriate settings, our Take the Next Step Peer Educators will co-design effective engagement strategies and multi-media education tools, and deliver a range of activities that aim to support young, diverse women to confidently assert boundaries and reach out for assistance when required. The key objective of this project is to promote future healthy relationships, prevent experiences of financial and sexual abuse, and ensure that young women experience economic and housing security into the future.
